Sustainable Activity: How to make Kindness Capes
Inspired by the Kindness Project to make the world a kinder place, we decided to create our own ‘Kindness Capes’. Our Educator Grace spoke to the children about how kindness is our superpower and the importance of spreading kindness. As part of our Planet Protectors program, we are encouraging the children to engage in learning experiences that involve the sustainable use of textiles. Our fabrics used for projects at preschool are sourced from The Makers Place in Teralba NSW, a local makers and craft store dedicated to giving new life materials otherwise destined for landfill.
How to Make a Kindness Cape at Home
You can recreate this simple and fun activity at home with a few basic materials:
Materials Needed:
- A piece of fabric (old sheets, scarves, or second-hand fabric work well)
- Elastic (about 1–2 cm wide)
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
- Scissors
- Measuring tape or ruler
Steps:
- Choose Your Fabric: Pick a piece of fabric that your child likes. Measure and cut it to a length that reaches just below their shoulders.
- Cut the Elastic: Measure around your child’s neck or shoulders and cut a piece of elastic that will fit comfortably.
- Attach the Elastic: Fold the edge of the fabric over the elastic to create a small casing. Sew it in place using a sewing machine or by hand. The elastic will help the cape stay on when worn.
- Personalise: Encourage your child to decorate their cape with fabric markers, patches, or other craft items
During our sewing session, Grace highlighted how sourcing fabrics from second-hand shops prevents them from ending up in land-fill. This activity demonstrates to children the importance of looking after the environment, whilst also establishing practical life skills that support their fine motor development.
Now your child has a superpower cape to wear and share kindness wherever they go! Try out this fun activity for yourself at home or in the classroom!
