Natural dyes are colours that emerge from natural materials when extracted and then utilised to dye cloths and fabrics. They can originate from plants, minerals and vegetables.
It is a great and sustainable way to renew and recycle materials, without creating waste. Creating natural dyes also offers an eco-friendly and non-toxic alternative to synthetic dyes. Natural dyes also create earthier looking tones than synthetic dyes, providing a more natural look when dyeing.

How to naturally dye a tablecloth

We decided to experiment with natural dyeing of a preschool tablecloth using Marigolds and Turmeric.

First we dissected the flowers by removing the petals and stems. After examining the flowers, we noted how the Marigold seeds look different to other flower seeds. As we smelled the flowers we were provided with a great learning opportunity, where we discussed how Marigold seeds produce a scent that helps keep away unwanted bugs in the garden

We explained to the children that to dye the fabric we were going to add the Marigolds to water and it would boil slowly to release the colour.  We also added a sprinkle of turmeric to help create a vivid colour. The children started to make predictions about the colour they would produce, “It will be orange like the flowers” they predicted.

To allow the fabric to absorb the dye, we left the fabric in the dye bucket for an hour. Later in the day we hung our dyed tablecloth out to dry and the children were excited to see the end result.

“I knew it would be yellow!”

This activity allowed the children to utilise early scientific thinking skills in observation and hypothesising as we experimented with creating colour. Experimenting with different natural mediums encourages children to think flexibly about sustainable practices, evident as children started to discuss other dye mediums. The children worked collaboratively and towards a common shared goal in making a tablecloth to be shared with their peers.

Try it for yourself at home!
